Atlanta airport- World’s busiest Airport
Hartsfield-Jackson is located 11 km away from the central business district of Georgia, Atlanta and United States. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta international airport is serving 88 million travelers every year, since 1999. The airport is considered as a primary hub for many airlines. Many airlines such as delta air lines, Air Tran airways, and Atlantic south east airlines take many passengers from this airport every year.
Atlanta airport has capacity to handle 88 million passengers and 970,235 flights every year and because of this fact it is considered as world’s busiest airport. Airport provides international services to South America, Central America, Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa.
The construction of airport was started on lease basis and the agreement was signed by Mayor Walter Sims on April 16, 1925. The first flight from this airport took off on September 15, 1926. Lately, delta air lines and eastern air lines are using Atlanta as a chief hub.
For servicing of transient air craft, the air port was used by the Air Force and United States Army in October 1940. The size of airport was doubled during World War 2 and broke the record of departure and arrival flights. It was capable of handling 1,700 flights in a day.
The first international flight from this airport was eastern air line flight to Montreal and Canada, which took off on June 1, 1956. In 1957, in order to eliminate the problem of congestion, work on new terminal was started. The opening of $21 million new terminal on May 3, 1961 made it possible to accommodate 6 million passengers. For the future development of Atlanta municipal airport, the work on new plan was started in 1967. Under the administration of Mayor Maynard Jackson, the largest construction in the south begun. The cost was approximately $500 million.
